Strange sound while scrolling on chrome on certain websites
My first thought was that maybe it's just audio interference caused by the wifi signal in the mouse, but if I turn the mouse off and just use my wired keyboard the sound still plays. Additionally, it only seems to happen on certain sites. For example, http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ causes it but reddit.com does not. Opening the same site in firefox does not create the sound but since I don't use firefox regularly I can't say for sure that all sites are ok.
I'm at a loss even trying to figure out where to go next to debug this. Does anyone have any ideas?
Text of In-Game Books
I've noticed some very well done screen grabs of in-game books. However, it has occurred to me to post something a bit more consolidated.
This thread will contain the text of all the in-game books I have written for Mianite Season Two. Books by other authors in the BlockWorks team may be added as they appear. Changes will be made over time to improve the sound of things, but never will the message be altered.
For review, analysis, and enjoyment, here you are~
I want to apologize for how things turned out in the trial yesterday.
My real intention was to enlist you and Firefox in some kind of community service, but things got out of hand. Please relay my apology to Firefox. And please forgive Steve and me for our rash behavior.
We haven't had much time to get to know each other. However, I would like to remedy that by sitting down with you soon for a chat.
I recall you mentioning the name, Mianite. But you spoke of a world, not a god. This confuses me. In the world of Ruxomar, we have a god named Mianite. In fact, he is the only god whose name we are allowed to mention in this town.
It is the law of Mianite's empire. Although Dagrun is not officially a part of that empire, my father has adopted the law into his own policy. Like Mianite, he despises the other two gods – especially one of them – for reasons we can get into another time.
Still, I am curious about what you know. Do you have gods in your old world of Mianite? What has brought you to Ruxomar, anyway?
Many questions. I hope we have a chance to address these topics soon.
While our town would appreciate your cooperation in the fair and honest handling of resources, we will also seek to understand any customs you bring from your world which may differ from our own.
P.S. Please don't tell my father, King Helgrind, about our conversations. You're not likely to see him, anyway.
Our glorious shield and savior, Mianite, was once a child alongside his two siblings. Maturing faster than his brother or sister, Mianite became their instructor in matters ranging from academics to warfare and, most importantly, those of the spirit. Although the siblings rejected Mianite's advice, he only grew in confidence and compassion, becoming known as a being without fault to his name.
Mianite and his quarrelsome brother, who shall not be named, soon established their spheres of influence in Ruxomar.
The brother, an insatiable prankster and manipulator, became a celebrated merchant of a cavern city inhabited by gullible dwarves. He built a monopoly of trade over Ruxomar, hoarding wealth for the dwarves and their select partners. His foolish acts resulted in the deprivation of hundreds of towns and villages.
Mianite, a being of higher mind, took up his dwelling in a frugal mountain city that pierced the clouds. Ruling it with gentle guidance, he offered protection to surrounding lands from an increasing population of dangerous monsters that had grown to plague Ruxomar. He offered it on the simple condition that all cities under him build a statue in his honor. His plans to establish a glorious empire were budding.
The sister, a known coward of desperate nature, hid herself away from the world's affairs, wasting her days in swamps and valleys, and occasionally harassing the citizens of a mercantile port town.
News spread of the quarrelsome brother's death. According to witnesses, an unknown assassin, draped in a charcoal cloak, had appeared in the cavern city and vanished with greater swiftness than any mortal creature could match, leaving the pitiful brother sprawling in a wake of spilt blood.
At the brother's funeral, Mianite resolved not to wither into tragedy, but to bloom out of it. In a spirit of reverence he would carry out his brother's legacy, quarrelsome as he was, by assimilating the dwarven city as the first main extension of his new empire. The dwarven city, thrown into disarray by the passing of its key figure, cried out for rescuing. Mianite blessed them with absolute protection from the encroaching monsters which burrowed ever closer to the cavern.
Backed by a new intake of immense resources, a powerful military exploded into operation. Now commanding two bases – the city above and the city below – Mianite swiftly expanded the wave of his might, and finally found himself in a position to declare the truth: “In my world, there shall be no other gods.” Civilizations increasingly declared their sole worship of him in order to receive the gift of his shielding. The song of his greatness grew until most of Ruxomar was embraced by its new, benevolent guardian.
The shining beacons of the world shined one name – Mianite. The god built his structures of governance around once lost lives, giving aid freely to those who embraced him as their supreme deity.
The cowardly sister sank into despair and, as her nature dictated, disappeared into hiding. The last anyone saw of her was her turning back as she fled from the port town she had harmed – a town which, having its eyes opened by Mianite, would no longer stomach her poison.
And that is how Mianite became the shining shield and savior which all of Ruxomar adores.
The world of Ruxomar saw its three gods grow up in relative tranquility. The two brothers quarreled over their forming ideals – Dianite's being pleasure, and Mianite's order. The sister, Ianite, always reunited them by reminding them of their common desire to see life flourish. But the brothers' hearts grew distant and their rivalry bitter even as Ianite clung to the belief that nothing would change. Mianite and Dianite, opposed in temperament but equal in ambition, soon established their spheres of influence in Ruxomar.
Dianite, desiring no worship for himself but being a creature of persuasive allure, became a celebrated merchant of a cavern city inhabited by dwarves, offering them wisdom in the art of mining and selling precious ores. He built a monopoly of trade in Ruxomar, blessing the dwarves and their numerous partners with an over abundance of wealth. His industry stimulated Ruxomar’s economy, resulting in affluence even in realms outside his trade agreements.
Mianite, in contrast, took up his dwelling in a frugal mountain city that pierced the clouds. Ruling it as a sovereign being, he offered protection to surrounding lands from an increasing population of dangerous monsters that had begun to irritate Ruxomar. He offered it on the simple condition that all cities under him build a statue in his honor. In secret he dreamed to one day establish an empire.
Ianite watched in silentfear as her brothers carried out their lives in fragile balance with the wider world. The goddess, denying in her heart that anything was wrong, passed her days strolling through meadows, communing with eagles, and overseeing the pleasant lives of the residents of a mercantile port town.
A jarring blow shook the world. News spread like wildfire of Dianite's death. According to witnesses, an unknown assassin, draped in a charcoal cloak, had appeared in the cavern city and vanished with greater swiftness than any mortal creature could match, leaving Dianite sprawling in a wake of spilt blood.
At Dianite's funeral, held beneath the lofty arches of the cavern city, Ianite saw through her tears an unexpected lightness in Mianite's face - a sort of liberation.
In denying his involvement in his brother's death, Mianite could not be held in firm suspicion. Gods could not kill other gods; they had tried before. And even if the assassin had acted on the orders of Mianite, how could anyone hope to bring forth proof? The assassin became widely regarded as a stranger - an isolated attacker.
Taking the opening his brother's death provided, Mianite realized his long held dream of creating an empire. The dwarven city, thrown into disarray by the passing of its idol, was ripe for the picking. Mianite offered the dwarves a deal they could not refuse – absolute protection from the encroaching monsters which burrowed ever closer to the cavern – and thus took control.
Backed by a new intake of immense resources, a powerful military exploded into operation. Now commanding two bases – the city above and the city below – Mianite swiftly expanded the wave of his might, issuing a new law: “In my world, there shall be no other gods.” Civilizations increasingly declared their sole worship of him in order to receive the gift of his shielding. The noise of his greatness grew until most of Ruxomar was subjugated beneath its new, benevolent guardian.
Throughout the realm, the beacons of one god shone bright – Mianite. The god built his structures of dominance around once free lives, denying aid to those who refused him as their supreme deity. Countless villages fell into poverty or crumbled into extinction. The free people of Ruxomar held no hope of breaking Mianite's grip as the majority of their fighting power was devoted to stemming the tide of monsters.
The goddess Ianite sank into despair, watching the balance of the world swing unhinged. Broken by the embroiling chaos, she disappeared into hiding. The last anyone saw of her was her turning back as she bade farewell to the port town she loved – a town which, having turned its gaze to Mianite, no longer loved her.
A prophecy stirred among the people of Ruxomar – a prophecy propagated by a lone priest who sang the coming of four heroes from the sky.
As followers of Ianite, we do not adhere to any one institution for absolute guidance. Nor do we view any one belief system as the true path. Lady Ianite brings unity to the separated; balance to the wavering. For as long as the goddess leads us in these pursuits, we take her as the figurehead of an infinite, incomprehensible movement, which the goddess would name, "All That Is."
Our ideal is this: in the face of oppression, to offer calm negotiation; in the face if tyranny, to show mercy to our captors; in the face of death, to sacrifice ourselves, that flowers of guilt might bloom from our killers' bellies.
But there is a time, too, for nature to deal back the wounds it has received. There is a time, when a brother or sister ails at the hand of tyranny, to sever the hand at the wrist.
When rage boils in our blood and begs to spring, we will not block the throat of the volcano. We will rise, casting aside our ideals like a scorched garment, and overwhelm our oppressors with wrath.
We are not pacifists. Nor are we vindicators. We are nature. We are whatever balance demands. We are void and we are radiance at once. We are the healer. We are the warrior.
By acting on our purest convictions, we give hope to our goddess, who in despair wallows; whose heart matches the heart of the earth; whose breaths flutter and gasp like ours; whose steps wander realms untold, seeking what cannot be found, but only fought for. In jubilation we fight for her. In drawing our swords, we call her back. We say rise, Lady Ianite. Rise and reclaim your place in All That Is.
I feel like I can't do what I need to do.
My arms are sore. I'm holding this blade to get familiar. Until you and your friends came to town, I hadn't used one. Not even once. You inspired me.
What did you think of Ianite's Creed? I wrote it. It's only my personal interpretation of things.
I'm not sure which path to take. Mercy and self-sacrifice? The volcano of wrath? Or something in between? A careful, slow revolution? Or will I do nothing? Let the oppression continue?
I can see myself doing all of these things. I don't know who I am or what I am capable of.
Help me take back this town from Mianite and my father. I don't know if this is the right thing to say, but I feel that I must say it. I promise no reward except whatever sense of accomplishment you might gain. I don't know if it's the right thing to do. I don't know what Ianite would say.
But I know that Ianite was hurt by my father. I want her back. I want to see her happy and welcome in the port town she loves. I don't know how to welcome her. But I don't think my father will let it happen – not as he is.
Words are easy. Actions are hard. I'm sorry for laying these burdens on you. Whatever you decide, know that I consider you a friend.
