Catching My First Identity Thief - Holiday Special!
TL;DR - Identity thief gets arrested a week before Christmas.
It begins this past Saturday night. Our hotel is 90% occupied for a large event happening a few blocks away when a man walks through the door to book a couple rooms for the night. As soon as he gets in front of me, the smell of weed is very strong and I'm instantly getting a sketchy vibe (spoiler alert, I should have trusted my instincts). Now, normally when this happens I'll quote a rate $20 or $30 dollars higher than the BAR. With our rooms actually selling for $109, I thought quoting a rate of $149 would be enough to deter this guy away.
Nope! He agrees to get not only one, but two King rooms for 2 nights at $149. Okay, so we'll make some extra revenue for the weekend...but I'm still not thrilled to have him in house. He gives me his I.D. and the guy's name is Ghetto Highman (changed for privacy of course) and the I.D. is from a different state. This is when red flag #2 popped up. You see, the state that the I.D. was from was a smooth, plastic ID. I know from experience that I.D.s from this particular state are usually textured and flexible. I called out Mr. Highman on this and he replied that it was just an older style etc, etc. and showed me a few other ID cards with his name on it. Okay.....well…. I suppose this all checks out. I continue making the reservations....but something just feels off and I can't accuse him of anything, but I am certainly on high alert.
Red Flag number three pops up when he asks to pay for each room with a different credit card. Okay......wouldn't it be easier for me to just route the charges from one room to the other? Nope. He says that one is a credit card and the other is a debit. I ask to see both cards and sure enough, both of them are cards with the name Ghetto Highman on them. Fair enough - things are certainly suspicious, but nothing to warrant any credible accusation. I check in both of the rooms and all the cards go through. I hand over the keys and right before Mr. Highman walks out the doors he asks for me to change one of the rooms to be under his Pop's name, Buster Fool (changed again for privacy). I take care of all of this and the night continues on without any incident and I warn my audit about the suspicious behavior. It is important to note that at this point Mr. Highman is in 601 and Mr. Fool is in room 703.
Fast forward to this afternoon and I'm coming in for my standard 3-11. My fellow FOM worked the 7-3 and we're relaying info from other shifts. With all the folks checked out from the weekend event, we were left at 17% projected occupancy for the night so I'm thinking I'll be in for a sloooooooow night. Going over my evening FOM checklist, I notice that Ghetto Highman and Buster Fool had extended their reservations at 1am, but the CC on Mr. Highman’s room 601 declined and the card for Mr. Fool’s room 703 approved. I ask my co-FOM and he informed me not to worry about it as he already spoke to the guest and he would be down by the end of the night to provide new payment. Fair enough - I decide that if they are not down by 7pm I'll lock them out of their roomexcepttheywerearrestedbeforethen
Pretty early on in my shift I see these young, scrappy looking people walk into my front door and they begin looking around as if they were looking for something/someone. I ask them if there’s anything I can do to help them.
“Aww yeah man, I’m just lookin’ for my girl’s room. She’s in 703 – should be under the name Fool”
Since they gave the last name and room number, I would normally just point them in the right direction to the elevator….but thinking back to my gut feelings from Saturday night I tell them that I’ll just need to call up to the room and ask if they are expecting any visitors. I call the room and a gentleman picks up the receiver and confirms that he is expecting guests (Although the guests just said it was “His Girl’s” room……) As the two gentleman head toward the elevator one of them stops and asks me…
Rando “Yeah, do you guys have breakfast here?”
Me “Yes Sir! We do provide a hot and complimentary breakfast every morning”
Rando “So, is it open right now?”
Me –Looks at watch- “Well, It’s 4:30pm right now, so our breakfast won’t be open until 6am tomorrow morning”
Rando “Oh, okay man. Cuz I though some places, you know…have a 24 hour breakfast”
With that encounter behind me, I hope that I don’t have to deal with any more buffoonery from 601 or 703……that is…..until around 6pm.
Around 6pm that evening I get a call from a Mrs. Concerned Woman.
Me – “Thanks for calling –hotel- this is Copelandish. How may I help you?
CW – “Yeah, so I’ve already called my bank to cancel my card and I’ve submitted a file with corporate, but I wanted to see if you could give me some more info. See, I received a text notification that my card had been authorized without a magnetic swipe for $25, and while I was looking at that it showed that someone swiped my card and authorized an amount of $346.96 and I traced the authorizations back to your hotel. The concerning part is that I’ve had possession of my card this whole time, and when I cancelled the card after seeing the charges I shredded my card….so I was just wondering, is the person who used my information still at your hotel?”
MFW I hear this
Instantly all the little weird flags come rushing back to the front of my mind and before I finish asking her for the last 4 digits of her card I’ve pulled up Mr. Highman’s room – 601.
Sure enough, the card details that our concerned woman shared with me were the same as the card on Mr. Highman’s room 601. Now, normally I don’t give out details about if a guest is in house or not….but I decide to make an exception here. I inform the concerned woman that the person who had used her information was indeed still in house, and that if she gave me her callback info I would inform my GM, call the authorities, and contact her again after doing so.
I explain the situation to my GM and she agrees that this is the best course of action. Sure, we’re losing some revenue….but we’d rather bring an identity thief to justice than anything else. I then call the non-emergency police line and they tell me that they’ll be sending a couple officers out shortly. I also call my houseperson, maintenance man, laundry attendant, and security guard to the desk for a little pow-wow and let them know that the police will be stopping by and that they will probably be making an arrest.
When the two officers arrive, I tell them the situation and ask to speak with the concerned woman – I give them her number and one officer begins to gather information from her while I explain the situation from Saturday night to the other officer. While I’m talking to the police, we find out that our concerned woman if from a town next over from ours, so if she wanted to press charges, she would need to call her local municipality to give our police the authorization to nab this slimeball while he’s still here on property.
At the same time this is happening, I notice out the corner of my eye a shady-looking gentleman just leisurely milling about our lobby. He stopped by our fireplace, casually browsing the random fake/real books in our library, and at one point even taking a picture of a painting hanging on a wall with his phone. While aimlessly looking around, he would keep taking glances at the scene unfolding at the desk – Me, my houseperson, and security guard all talking with police officers. This guy finally decides to grab a book from the library and rather abruptly makes a bee-line to the elevators. Sensing something was wrong, I stopped the guest.
Me “Excuse me sir, the book that you have is for decoration only – Would you please place it back in our library?”
Suspicious guy “Awh man I’m sorry cuz – I was just gonna read this book real quick. It’s cool cuz I got a room man, you think I can’t read?”
Me - “Oh, I’m sorry sir! You’re more than welcome to read that book. By the way, what was your room number again?
You guessed it! He said 601!!! Now, I haven’t actually seen Mr. Highman since Saturday night, so the fact that I’ve now seen four random sketchy dudes without a trace of the principal guest is starting to make me nervous. What if this guy isn’t even up there?
By the time the suspicious guy got on the elevator, two more police officers pulled up in a squad SUV. They just got word from concerned woman’s local police that our officers here had the authority to nab Mr. Highman for suspected Identity theft. As the two additional officers walk through the door, I get an in house call from room 601.
Mr.Highman- “Hey man, this is Mr.Highman up in room 601. Listen, we’re trying to hook up our Playstation to our TV but can’t seem to figure it out. Do you think you could like, send someone from maintenance up or something to help us?”
I’d like to pause and point out at this point that…..
- A: These people know they used a fraudulent card to book a room and know it is now declining.
- B: These people know the police are here and are looking for you
- C: These people are now asking a member of our staff to come up to their room, unaccompanied by anyone else.
The police now decide that it’s time to go talk to Mr. Highman and see what’s going on. Two officers go to the elevators and are up on the 6th floor for about 10 minutes. When they come down, One officer is shuffling through a stack of IDs, Credit Cards, and a wallet while the other officer is receiving a barrage of pleas from Mr. Highman as he talks a mile a minute. “Awh man, you don’t understand - See this is all just a big misunderstanding – listen, this doesn’t have to be messy or anything – You gotta hear me out – ect.”
So now there are three officers surrounding Mr. Highman – the 4th officer holding all the I.D.’s comes up behind the desk with me and points to Mr. Highman and asks me – “Can you identify this man?”
Mr. Highman now is pleading with me…” Awh man, I know it was late at night when I checked in – You don’t have to make this messy man. You obviously just got things mixed up or someth—“
Me- “Well Officer, that man is Ghetto Highman”.
Officer- “Are you absolutely sure?”
Me – “Yessir – I even have this man on footage. This is without a doubt Ghetto Highman who booked two rooms on Saturday night. One for himself and another for Mr. Buster Fool in 703”
The officer then shows me the ID he was holding. A local ID for Buster Fool…..with Ghetto Highman’s picture on it.
Somehow, Buster Fool made a fake ID and had that name also printed on multiple credit cards with other people’s information on them (I’m assuming he somehow got the CC information from an ATM skimmer or something)
Officer – “You said you had footage of him checking in?”
Buster Fool (AKA Ghetto Highman) – “Naw man, you got it backwards ‘member? I checked in under Buster Fool and added my Pop’s name, Ghetto Highman to the other room. Man, he’s got this all wrong….etc.”
So I take that officer back to the cameras without saying a word while the other officers converge and place Buster Fool – AKA Ghetto Highman – in handcuffs. Once the officer sees the footage of this guy physically swiping both fraudulent cards, they have enough information and officially place Mr. Fool under arrest. As two officers escorted him to the squad car, the other officers go up to 601 and 703 to inform all guests to vacate the property (Thankfully this was all done peacefully and quietly)
Once they take him to the station they discover that he was actually wanted for a few other crimes as well. With any luck, he will receive felony charges for all the cases of fraud that have now been brought to light. The police ask for all the CC details for 601 and 703 and I happily give over any and all information to incriminate that piece of garbage.
OH! And the best part? Turns out he tried to do the very same thing exactly one week prior with our regular auditor, but none of his fraudulent cards would work! I got to call the police again and give them even more information.
I never heard back from our concerned guest, but our GM updated her corporate complaint file to inform her that the person who stole her identity had been arrested.
Never a dull moment here! Now I plan to finish off this Audit shift, go to my father’s house, and have a big Christmas dinner because I have Christmas Eve/Day off for the first time in 3 years! I hope this tale brings joy to anyone working the front lines over the holiday. Be blessed and enjoy the extra pay!!!
