A reflection of the last three years.

Recently Synergy turned 3 years old. We also unintentionally-intentionally dropped a plugin update at the same time, and a new Lobby. This post isn't to serve as another changelog (for that you can see the [roundup](unintentionally) that was posted yesterday). Instead, this is a look back at Synergy's history, and how the community, staff, and server itself have changed over the years. (If you would like to die, take a shot every time you see the word "update", "change", or "server")

The Tale of Two Servers

To understand the beginnings of Synergy, we actually need to take a look at the history of two other servers, CubeKrowd and Crimsonstone. Crimsonstone was a private vanilla survival server started by me in August 2013, and I invited a number of friends from my main server at the time, CubeKrowd, and Redstoner to join. For a short while our lives were in harmony between the three servers. We would play on Crimsonstone for survival whenever we felt like it, and we would spend most of our time on CubeKrowd and/or Redstoner for our creative plots satisfaction. Soon, however, the unthinkable happened. CubeKrowd started shedding staff left and right and the once-dozens-strong staff team of the server soon was reduced to a handful. The next month, the lead admin and creator of the JL-side of CubeKrowd left and the server was shut down. Eventually the server was brought back up, but through the panic and confusion it was clear that the server was changed forever. However, it wasn't yet clear whether it was for better or worse. (Spoiler: CubeKrowd is currently doing pretty good)

Something Called Crimsonstone Creative...

Between just wanting to create our own server and preparing for a potential relapse of a CubeKrowd implosion, members of Crimsonstone started work on what was then called Crimsonstone Creative (CSC). With its name confusing in more ways than one, Crimsonstone Creative was a public creative and survival server started by members of Crimsonstone. Some of Crimsonstone's players became staff of CSC, while the rest just obtained the randomly overpowered permissions that they still have today. The staff at CSC's creation were: zombachu (Admin), NightShade32 (Current name: AtriusX) (Admin), Enjiniaokage (Supervisor (a moderator-like rank)), and DaedricCreeper (Supervisor). We opened our doors to the public on July 15th, 2014, which is where we get Synergy's birthday from (more on that later). A server trailer was uploaded on nearly all YouTube channels of Crimsonstoners who had one, and CSC started off strong with over a hundred players checking the server out in the first week. 10 days later, an official Skype chat was made for the community to connect with each other when not on the server.
The limitations of the cheap hosting company that CSC started out with began to show with our active playerbase. On the 1st of August, Dondius and Chejdysz joined the ranks of Admin and Crimsonstone Creative was moved to their dedicated server. Many redstone creations cried out in joy that day from the increased processing power and tps. A day later, a rudimentary TeamSpeak server was made for the community to voice chat with each other for the first time.
On September 13th, one of the founding players of CSC, DaedricCreeper, resigned from the staff team. With only 1 Supervisor left and his effort not unnoticed, the decision was made to remove the rank entirely and promote Enjiniaokage to Admin. Around the same time, we also realized that Crimsonstone Creative was a really terrible name for the following reasons:
  1. People erroneously called Crimsonstone Creative "Crimsonstone", when Crimsonstone was the private vanilla survival server and Crimsonstone Creative was the public server running on Bukkit.
  2. Despite having "creative" in its name, Crimsonstone Creative also had a survival world.
  3. Crimsonstone Creative was a very long name for a server.

Something Called Synergy...

So, on the 20th of September we decided to give the server a facelift and rebranded to our current name, Synergy. We shed the red and white coloring of CSC in favor of a softer blue and grey theme. However, the gods of server hosting decided they were unhappy with this change and in early October they knocked our hosting company offline for a week. Luckily there was almost no data lost, but we started a semi-regular backup procedure after the incident just in case for the future.
On November 6th a new lobby was released. The building led by LoneAssassinC (Current name: LoneAC) with assistance from rydex55 (Current name: okaybabe), Jeg222, Dondius, and me to replace the old, terrible, and still CSC-branded original spawn that I made in half an hour. The new spawn also featured Synergy's first official minigame, /boat. It wasn't anything life-changing, but /boat was a cute game where the goal was to navigate a river full of obstacles in a boat as fast as possible.

Picking up Steam

On December 2nd, the last remaining references to Crimsonstone Creative were removed from Synergy when the custom plugin, CSCUtils, was renamed to SynergyCore. I also joined Night in making SynergyCore in this time and the rate of Synergy's development increased tenfold with two developers working together.
Synergy had its first update to a major Minecraft version on December 30th with Minecraft 1.8. The delay from the initial release of 1.8 to Synergy's updating was in part due to the DMCA fiasco with Bukkit, but at the time we also didn't have the same level of care with updating quickly that we do now.
One thing we did care about at the time, however, was being able to share music with others. On the 18th of January Synergy's official Plug.DJ room was made and for the first time the community was able to play songs with others.
The Toggle Update was released on February 7th, 2015, and was when we switched to the batch updates system. Rather than releasing parts of features over weeks, a large amount of changes would happen to the server at once and the update would be named in the roundup that followed. With The Toggle Update players were able to have individual personal settings for the first time, a feature that would eventually become one of the favorites of the server.
eniallator was added to the Admin team on April 10th, to the joy of the community and staff team alike.

The new Survival

With the original survival worlds having been thoroughly explored and an influx of new players taking place, Survival was reset on March 28th. In the 24 hours before the reset, however, nearly all rules were lifted in Survival for "The Purge". Players quickly made and broke alliances in an attempt to protect their goods from being stolen, but the community seemed to band together in an effort to thoroughly bomb the spawn out of existence. The rules were put back into effect and the brand new survival world was brought online, and the server returned to normalcy. For the moment.
To spice things up a bit, The Popcorn Update was released on Synergy's first birthday (though I seemed completely oblivious to this fact when writing the roundup) and included a number of augmentations that made Survival harder and crazier.
After a strong burst of activity in the first months of the world, activity quickly and sharply took a dive due to one bad decision the staff team made. For the world reset we gave players the option of transferring anything they could fit in their enderchest over. This led to people populating spawn and making bases in a record amount of time, but very shortly after the community ran out of things to do and the world suffered for it. We learned from our mistake and vowed never to do that again. For a while, however, we had to live with our decision.

"Wait, where did they say the hard drive was?!"

Once again the server hosting gods frowned upon Synergy (though we quickly realized that no such gods exist and it was just a really shitty hosting company) and the server was knocked offline by a DDoS attack in early August. This event timed up nearly perfectly with the hosting company "upgrading" their datacenter and subsequently shipping parts of our server to 2 locations separated by 2000 miles. A couple months before this event occurred, it was discovered that the company overcharged Dondius and Chejdysz by a thousand dollars cumulatively throughout the years. They were eventually refunded, but goodwill was lost. With the company struggling to find the server's missing hard drive somewhere on the west coast with the rest of the parts in the east, the search for a new hosting company started. Eventually online.net was chosen and we haven't had a negative experience with them yet.
Thanks to the semi-regular backup procedure enacted after the last major server incident, only a week of data was lost. We took this to heart and as soon as Synergy came back online we created automated scripts to regularly create backups of Synergy and completely revised the procedure for ensuring as little data is lost as possible from an unexpected shutdown.
The server was brought back online on August 21st and a couple days later we released The Return Update. The Helper rank was introduced to serve as a moderator-like rank to assist Admins in their duties to the community. The first Helper team consisted of: Jeg222 (promoted to Helper on August 29), joelzaper (promoted on September 4), LoneAC (promoted on September 5), and Skrileton (promoted on September 7).

Goodbye...

On October 16th we said goodbye to Plug.DJ as the site temporarily shut down due to financial difficulties moved to Dubtrack as a replacement.
On November 17th we said goodbye to joelzaper from the Helper team.
On February 14th, 2016 we said goodbye to the first Plots world, PlotMe, and the last traces of Crimsonstone Creative's old color scheme.

And hello!

On January 2nd, we said hello to Synergy's 1000th player.
On February 18th we said hello to The Love Update, which was named as such because it was coincidentally released on Valentine's day. The update was mainly full of smaller changes and bug fixes to the custom plugins, but the majorness of the Plots reset more than made up for the rest.
On March 5th we said hello to 1.9, the second major update for Synergy and the first that we updated to within a week of Mojang releasing it.
On March 20th we said hello to The Lightning Update, so named for both the relatively quick update to 1.9 and the short month since the last major plugin update.

"The Saddest Update"

In the span of one month, we saw the departure of two Admins: Atrius and Eni. Changes to the custom plugins were small, but to announce this shift in the staff team The Saddest Update was released.

Synergy 2.0

The summer of 2016 was fairly quiet, save for the server's update to 1.10. They say "third time's the charm", but for us this really was the case. With some work on our end and the Spigot team doing some work on their end, we managed to update Synergy to 1.10 within the same day that Mojang released it.
The quiet summer was quiet for a good reason, because an absolute beast of an update was unveiled on the 3rd of August. While on the surface nothing was happening, every single line of code in Synergy's custom plugins was being rewritten from the ground up. Over the last two years the code had grown unwieldy and disgusting to look at due to the first version of SynergyCore never being designed for further expansion. Remaking the plugins with this in mind paved the way for future updates to be made much easier, quicker, and better than ever before. Since we had a vague roadmap of what we wanted to add to Synergy in the future, the groundwork for those future updates was laid in the new code as well.
The update was loaded with so many new features, changes, bug fixes, tutorials, and rants that the roundup actually required making two separate posts to make it digestible. One of the largest changes was the overhaul of the popular toggles, now named settings for its greater versatility. A snazzy new GUI was added to interface with altering settings, and many more settings were added to make use of it. THE Update also introduced SynergyLobby and SynergyCreative to the server for the first time to join the existing SynergyCore and SynergySurvival, so for the first time we truly had a suite of custom plugins to refer to as "SynergySuite".

A Mixed October and a 1.11-y November

As the month began, another Helper departed. Jeg222, the first Helper, resigned from the staff team. Things picked up a little a couple days later an update to Survival, starting with the second Purge and concluding with the third world of Survival. We definitely didn't do an enderchest transfer, but we did try something with the new world that ended up working great: A custom generator. Using Minecraft's custom preset system for altering the world generator, the staff team spent hours perfecting the values to create a world that was vibrant and interesting, but not overly crazy to the point of making the entire world floating asteroids.
Adding to the fun, Mojang released 1.11 the following month and Synergy quickly updated to it.

Rest in Peace, Helper Team

To start off the month of December, we released The Connection Update to automate the process of giving Members permissions on Dubtrack and Discord.
In the end of the month, we said farewell to LoneAC from the Helper team, and promoted Skrileton to an Admin. For now, the Helper rank died.

Long-Awaited Changes

To kick off 2017, we finally moved away from Skype on January 14 to Discord. We had a Discord server for a couple of months by that point but we still used the community Skype chat as Synergy's main form of offline communication. I could rant about how bad Skype is for over a day, but for this post I'll just say that Skype is really, really, bad and Discord has proven to be pretty, pretty, good.
On April 8th the beta version of the website was finally released, after 2 years of promising that it'll happen "soon". This fact was reflected in the name of The "Holy sh*t, it took you guys long enough" Update, and another long-awaited feature, cooldown functionality for redstone inputs, was released at the time as well.

The Calm Before the Storm

So far the year of 2017 has been relatively quiet, but on June 2nd we said goodbye to long-standing Admin and benefactor to the server, Chejdysz. 1.12 also was released by Mojang on June 7th, which gave Synergy the opportunity to do the second single-day update of the server's history.

Now.

On July 13th, things started happening in preparation for The Birthday Update. The first major change to the ranks of the server since Helper was introduced and the largest change since the server's inception occurred. Distinguished, Member+, Builder, Donator, and Donator+ were all surgically removed from the permissions file and website, with Member+ and Builder being merged to create a new rank, Devoted, and the donator ranks being entirely overhauled. Subscription Donator was introduced for those that would rather donate monthly instead of once, and Full Donator was made for those that prefer the latter. Almost unnoticed in these changes was the renaming of Novice to Guest, for the single-letter chat abbreviation's higher familiarity for new players.
The following day, a new spawn was released. This one was headed by MelonBP, with additional assistance from Hexahedrons, 0neill, yop_tropix, SacredRedstone, and me. Due to the theme of the new spawn and no space for a river worthy of the Princeton row crew team, /boat sadly did not survive the journey to the next world. However, not to let our bored community members waste away, we introduced The Hunt, a new minigame based around finding hidden easter eggs around Lobby.
It's unknown whether it was fate or coincidence but in the week surrounding Synergy's 3rd birthday there was a noticeable and constant increase in activity, leading to a record 14 people in a Discord voice call on July 13th, then a record 13 people in the Dubtrack room on July 15th.

The Future

I don't usually like to divulge our plans too far into the future, but I'll make an exception for this post (especially since we've already hinted at/said most of the following things, haha).
In the short term, we're going to expand the website to include forums for the community and a news feed for announcements and roundups. Essentially, we're going to be killing the subreddit. The next plugin update we plan to finally fully replace Essentials by rewriting all of its useful functionality in SynergySuite, in addition to replacing many of the other plugins Synergy currently uses.
Further into the future, a spawn for Plots is planned with a new and much harder edition of The Hunt.
Even further into the future, expect to see the return of /challenge and whole bunch of other commonly-requested features.
Eventually we hope to transition to Bungeecord for separating world groups instead of our current solution of Multiverse. This probably isn't going to happen for a while, though.
Hopefully you enjoyed this dive into Synergy's history over the last 3 years. Here's to experiencing many more!
For a comparison between our ranks and plugins from the beginning and now, check out this post that was also released today.
